Americans Rally Round the Stars & Stripes As We Approach September 11th

When the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel, in Washington, DC, located just a block from the White House, wanted to purchase a vintage American flag to use for a September 11th tribute, they turned to the internet. On GoAntiques, the fastest-growing, fixed-price antiques site, they found a perfect choice. "It was an older parade flag from the 60's with full fringe, and a beautiful old creamy yellow patina," said Bonnie Beckman, of Antique Emporium, in Traverse City, Michigan, one of GoAntiques' 600 dealers. Vintage flags conjure up a feeling of nostalgia, and create a fitting backdrop to commemorate this day in our nation's history.

It's no small coincidence that this collectible was found on GoAntiques. Since its inception, GoAntiques has become the resource for exceptional antiques and rare items - many not found elsewhere. Flags are just one of the many patriotic collectibles that are seeing a resurgence of interest as we approach September 11th. GoAntiques has seven channels, and over 600 dealers were polled to find out what would be an appropriate purchase at this special time. Here are a few of the many special items collectors will want to click on for more information:

A Cyrus Furey "Portrait of George Washington" (American, Indiana, dated 1917, signed oil on canvas. Cyrus Furey was a barber in the Fort Wayne, Indiana area. He painted two large historical portraits--one of Lincoln and one of Washington--and hung both in his shop. The portrait of Washington was included in the Bicentennial Exhibition at Colonial Williamsburg, and was in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum from 1976 through 1977. The exhibition was developed and curated by Donald Walters. This is a tremendous piece of patriotic folk art. Price: $17,500.00.

Photos show Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, covered wagon, Pilgrims, Columbus, Liberty bell, Molly Pitcher, Geo. Washington cutting cherry tree, Minuteman, Boston Tea Party, Spirit of 76, and Pocahontas. A wartime letter to David Balasco the famous theatre producer reads "THE WHITE HOUSE Washington 10 January, 1918 My dear Mr. Balasco: May I not express my personal admiration at your action in offering the Militia of Mercy a benefit at your theatre on January fourteenth to provide free wool for our boys in the Army and Navy? A Carved Eagle Wooden Inkstand- from the 19th century, or a beautiful American Double Eagle Historical Flask - C. 1870's - Pittsburgh, PA would make great desk accessories. The aqua color Liquor Flasks were made by the Union Glass Works in Pennsylvania, in the early 1800's.

In difficult times, celebrities can often be counted on to do their part for Old Glory. At GoAntiques you will find a patriotic still shot of Gene Autrey in his military uniform from the late 1940s, or the Rock Hudson US Treasury Award, received by Hudson for Patriotic Service to Community and Nation through the U. S. Savings Bonds Program Awarded February 20, 1957. Signed by Secretary of Treasury, Gil Humphey, and National Director, John R. Buckley. Price: $1,200.00.

Big Apple memorabilia, such as a photo of former New York mayor, Fiorello Henry La Guardia, is abundant. You can also find such items as a finely crafted patriotic poster of women working in factories during World War I, or a 40's poster of Betsy Ross stitching the American flag. Or, you might prefer a Wheaton Limited Edition Betsy Ross Bottle. This ruby red bottle is one of Wheaton's Great American's Series and is a Limited Edition featuring Betsy Ross. The back has the image of Betsy's house on Arch Street in Philadelphia, the birthplace of the American flag. Wheaton closed their doors in the late 70's and their bottles are expected to increase in value. 1970's A sterling silver Patriotic Sterling Heart Pendant & Brooch Set makes a wonderful gift.

Business is Booming for Antiques Dealers on the Internet
-- GoAntiques Opens Up A Global Market --

GoAntiques was born in the early years of the Internet boom and has grown exponentially, truly becoming an Internet success story. Positioning on search engines, strategic alliances with other Internet sites, supplying inventory to portal shopping sites, constant innovations and personalized service has made GoAntiques an exception - an Internet site with power and incredible potential for the antiques dealer.

The Internet has truly expanded dealers' business beyond their expectations. Andrew Vogel of Wellesley House located in Illinois, specialists in English antiques, initially planned to have the GoAntiques website ancillary to his business. Three steady years of stable growth on GoAntiques has made this new medium a valuable and important contribution to the success and growth of Vogel's business. Sales from GoAntiques last year reached $50,000.

Ken Markley of Old Timers in Pennsylvania thought that his antiques business, which he took over from his father-in-law, would simply occupy him in retirement. Since joining GoAntiques, his business has doubled, and that's a conservative estimate. Markley states that he couldn't get along without the Internet, and that it is absolutely essential to his business, which is reaching its second million in sales after 13 years, over 4 of which have been on GoAntiques.

Antique Emporium, a group of 5 partners brought together by Bonnie Beckman from her group shop in Michigan, has done so well that after three years, she closed the shop. Beckman says that her story absolutely demonstrates that the Internet does work. Due to website traffic, antiques just move more quickly on GoAntiques than in a group store, and Beckman's story is proof. That is not to say that success does not depend on effort -- Antique Emporium has around 3,000 items listed at a time. Nonetheless, the process is simple, and well worth the time, as other dealers will attest! With discipline, Beckman jokes, her business will expand even more as she posts items on a weekly basis. Debbie Pekala of Antiquities, Inc. in Pennsylvania, also says with confidence that the more listings you place, the more you sell.

Pekala has experienced steady growth since she turned to the Internet. Her sales through GoAntiques are already 10 - 15% of store sales. Recently, projections are well into the six figures, and she has had such success in just one year, that she wants to expand her business on GoAntiques.

GoAntiques has made converts out of computer neophytes such as Pekala, and those whose previous online experience had made them a bit cynical. The traffic that GoAntiques generates is the most important difference between a dealer having his own website, and being part of one that is well connected. Before joining GoAntiques one year ago, Debbie Pekala sunk $5,000 into her own website, and she still hasn't broken even. Her first 6 months with GoAntiques resulted in $10,000 in sales due to significantly more buyers viewing her items.

GoAntiques markets aggressively, and their strategic alliances with major Internet portals generate an abundance of pageviews on the site - pageviews that result in strong sales. Old Timers Antiques receives 1,000's of views a day, as potential customers search the site for clocks. Old Timers sells on the average of 15 clocks a month, and Markley is thrilled, since sales on GoAntiques have made a real difference in his retirement income.

Dealers find that hard-to-move items consistently find buyers on GoAntiques. When she first joined the site, Debbie Pekala had a pre-1839 harp in her store for five years. While many customers were attracted to this beautiful piece, and most children unfortunately wanted to touch it, the harp simply didn't sell. This rare and valuable piece sold immediately on GoAntiques for $7,500, making Pekala a true believer in short order. Ken Markley finds that he can best meet his clients' needs through studying the kinds of items they are buying from other dealers, and he examines the detailed reports daily, so that he can meet customers' needs. Before he joined GoAntiques, Markley admits he made mistakes in judging what clients would buy - - some very expensive mistakes - - but through GoAntiques, he has it down to a science. Darlene Register of Mississippi finds that items that had been sitting in her shop for 6 whole years without a bit of interest have simply been snapped up on the Internet. Top quality rare books, like a pristine edition of Shakespeare have sold, when they simply would not have found buyers walking in off the street.

One of the greatest benefits to dealers is the fact that GoAntiques reaches a global market instantly. Darlene Register is thrilled that her business is now global, attracting a totally different market of interested buyers. Wellesley House has also expanded their client base all the way to Australia, and they consider a client in Perth a friend as well as a customer. As Vogel commented, with GoAntiques, customers around the world can shop as you sleep! Old Timers now has clock-watching clients in Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Denmark, South America, and Africa, and Ken feels his father-in-law would have been proud of the incredible growth of the business. Antique Emporium has sold items to every state in the nation, including Alaska and Hawaii, and has a number of overseas clients, including ones in the Netherlands and Switzerland.

GoAntiques is also the perfect solution for international dealers looking to expand their business into the U.S., or other countries, as the site's e-commerce capabilities relieves them of the complicated task of currency exchange. "Most of our UK dealers have been with GoAntiques quite a while, as it provides such great exposure for them," says Mark Illingworth, Managing Director, GoAntiques, Inc. UK Division. "In fact, the site is so popular here, that it has even been nominated for the BAC award (British Antiques and Collectibles), presented annually by Miller's Antiques Guide, and Homes & Antiques magazine (the UK equivalent of House & Garden)."

Remarkably, shoppers acquiring items on GoAntiques also pay the set price, whereas haggling seems to be the rule elsewhere! Comments Andrew Vogel: "99% of my buyers on GoAntiques trust the price listed on the Internet. You don't have the overhead that you do with a traditional 'brick and mortar' shop, so you can give the best fair price."

GoAntiques Lists Poche "Bed and Breakfast" Plantation for Sale

First Real Estate listing on the Site’s "Select Showcase" Channel

Baton Rouge, La. (October 22, 2001) -- If you are looking to buy a Bed & Breakfast plantation in the Deep South, complete with antique furnishings and all the trimmings of the old days, you might contact a real estate agent... or, you might go to GoAntiques (www.goantiques.com).

The GoAntiques Network recently listed the Poche Plantation for sale on its "Select Showcase" channel (www.goantiques.showcase.com). This is the first time a complete bed and breakfast, including land and furnishings, has been listed for sale on an antiques’ related website.

Poche Plantation, resting on nearly 8 acres of pristine land at 6554 Louisiana Highway 44 in the community of Convent, Louisiana, was originally constructed in 1870 and completely renovated in 1997. The entire plantation consists of a 5,768 square foot main house with an additional 1,707 feet of covered porch plus an original two-room pre-Civil War era cottage. Four new and separate structures were added recently. The main house is a four bedroom, four bath home with original trim work including wainscoting, seven fireplaces with original marble, cypress, and cast iron mantles, formal stairway with hardwood balustrade, glass transoms, plantation shutters, and upholstered cornices. The house also boasts more than a hundred period antiques including 7 chandeliers and a large handcrafted Prudent Mallard tester canopy bed.

Poche Plantation owners, Greg and Linda Meffert, decided to list the plantation for sale on GoAntiques after being convinced of the website's ability to draw an audience of antiques’ enthusiasts. "The plantation has been a great joy for us in recent years," says Mrs. Meffert. "We love the place and want someone with our love of history and antiques to buy it. It just makes sense to list it for sale on GoAntiques."

GoAntiques CEO, Ken Buhler, agrees with the Mefferts’ assessment of the website’s ability to attract qualified audiences. "We are excited about the opportunity we have to represent this home on the market and are very interested in the potential of Historical Homes and Bed & Breakfasts as vertical markets that will blend into our business model. GoAntiques customers from around the world have purchased many significant items online. The GoAntiques Network currently gets more than 500,000 visitors per month from 90 countries. We believe we can provide visibility to this beautiful property not available through traditional listings. The Mefferts have done a fabulous job of renovating their home, while maintaining the important antique and historical value of the plantation," says Buhler. "We're convinced that if we can sell a $6,725 sugar chest, a $7,500 harp, or a $14,500 clock, we can sell an entire plantation as beautiful and well-appointed as this."

Even though it's a genuine antique home, the plantation does have some modern accoutrements. Built-in appliances include a dishwasher, compactor, sub-zero commercial grade refrigerator/freezer, range and oven, and more. For photos of the plantation, visit the website at www.goantiques.com and enter "plantation" in the search field.

GoAntiques Provides the Single Best Place to Buy or Sell Quality Antiques on the Internet
-- Award-Winning Website is a Full-Service Antiques Resource --

At a time when most dot-coms are facing their biggest challenges, a select few are not only surviving, they're thriving as well. What separates these successful websites from the pack? They offer genuine value to their audiences, and provide the benefits and services that enable them to withstand the precarious economy of the Internet.

In the online world, one of the hottest new success stories is GoAntiques (www.goantiques.com) -- a fixed price "virtual warehouse" where top antiques dealers from around the world list their inventories. Since its inception, GoAntiques has quickly become the premier resource on the internet for quality antiques - no small feat for a company that was launched during the dot.com fallout.

"From the outset, GoAntiques had a sound business model," says founder and CEO Ken Buhler. "With so many dot-com start-ups, it was a case of 'too much, too soon.'"

It is a model that has served GoAntiques well. The first month the site was up, it had 35,000 visitors with just a dozen featured dealers. Today, GoAntiques represents more than 500 reputable dealers and galleries, worldwide. It draws 1.1 million visitors a month with millions of dollars monthly moving through the popular antiques site. There's been a steady increase in membership among the country's top dealers, with members in 41 states and 14 countries. In addition, Ken Buhler reports that the site's sales have increased 88 percent since January 2002, dramatic growth for a website in the current economy. Key to its immediate success is its streamlined look that allows customers to shop in a more focused way.

The GoAntiques website consists of seven individual resource "channels". They include: the Select Showcase channel, with the "creme de la creme" of luxury items for the most discerning, high-end collector; the Antiques channel, featuring pre-World War II antiques; the eclectic Collectibles channel, a great site for the younger collector interested in various collectibles; the Estate Items channel, representing previously owned items from post-World War II to the present; the Design Studio for newly manufactured antique design reproductions and one-of-a-kind items from selected sources; the newly launched Coins & Currency channel with a selection of coins from ancient times to newly issued coins and currency; and the newest channel being developed, the Wholesale Warehouse channel which will be available exclusively to dealers, offering them wholesale prices on a wide range of goods.

What makes GoAntiques particularly unique is its attention to providing service to both its dealer members and its customers. The site offers an unusual amount of benefits, including:

  • The ability to browse channels by category or keyword;
  • The option to contact dealers directly with any questions;
  • The use of the F.I.N.D. (Fresh Inventory Notification Device) system, proprietary software that notifies you when a specific item for which you are looking for yourself or a client has been added to the site;
  • An assurance program that protects both buyers and sellers transacting business through the site;
  • A monthly newsletter featuring articles, information about upcoming antique shows and inventories of new member dealers;
  • A toll-free number, which allows users to speak directly to an account representative;
  • The ability to purchase items through the GoAntiques' e-commerce system programmed for the optimal safest shopping.
  • Important strategic alliances with some of the world's premier shopping sites, such as Yahoo!, AOL, MSN and Lycos, which means that pre-qualified buyers are driven directly to the site.

It's no surprise that the website is called GoAntiques, with president and CEO Ken Buhler at the helm. This man of action has over twenty years of experience in the antiques industry, but his love of antiques began as a teenager, when he restored and resold antique furniture. After founding a retail shop in his twenties, Ken decided he needed a faster pace, so he started an auction business, and soon learned to become an auctioneer himself. After a bout of wanderlust that took his antiques career from Baton Rouge to California and eventually Japan, Ken returned home and grew his auction business to the point where Dun & Bradstreet listed it as one of the top 100 auction houses in the country.

In the 1990's, Ken saw the potential of the Internet in the future of selling antiques. He developed the concept of a "virtual warehouse" where antiques dealers from around the world could list their inventories and expose them to consumers and other dealers quickly and easily.

Needing funding to execute its business plan, the company first approached the Stanford Group Company, headquartered in Houston, Texas. "We were attracted to the concept and felt that the antiques business would thrive in this medium," says Rocky Stein, Senior Vice President of Stanford Group Company, Investment Banking Division.

Recently, GoAntiques received additional financing from the Department of Economic Development, the State of Louisiana, where the company is based. Don J. Hutchinson, Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development stated: "Louisiana was pleased to participate in the public / private partnership with the Stanford Group to make this project happen. Louisiana: Vision 2020, the State's strategic plan for economic development, is a platform for innovative initiatives, designed to keep technology thriving and growing in the state. GoAntiques is a perfect example of a company developing a unique idea and creating an innovative entity."

(GoAntiques is a privately-held company headquartered in Baton Rouge, with additional offices in Columbus, Ohio and Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.)

Says Buhler, "From the outset, we benefited from the simple fact that we were a fixed-price site, not an e-Bay competitor like so many other look-alike auction sites that sprung up overnight on the heels of e-Bay's success. We found our niche in the market and have not only succeeded in reaching our initial goals, but are surpassing them! We've established ourselves as the most complete online resource for art, antiques and collectibles."

GoAntiques is the professional's site of choice. "We are dealer-driven," says Buhler. "We are all about helping antiques dealers expand and grow their businesses while providing the most comprehensive, thrilling shopping site for the customer and antiques 'buff'." What motivates dealers to become members? "In a word .... exposure!" says Kathy Kamnikar, Senior Vice President of Marketing at GoAntiques. "One of the biggest appeals to our member dealers is that through the internet you can become a global entity overnight. Items move far more quickly than if they were sitting in a store. The internet is also ideal for dealers in rural areas who want to grow their business cost-efficiently. They don't have to stay open longer hours to increase revenue. They'll recognize a greater profit more quickly. We're selling 24 hours a day, seven days a week and holidays! I've heard about deals transacted between American dealers in rural areas and Saudi Arabian buyers ... thanks to the internet."

Kamnikar, a marketing professional, is the founder of a website that she launched in 1995 called Antique Networking Inc. - the site became one of the most recognized names in the antiques industry, and won the CIO-100 Award in 2000 from CIO magazine for the highest level of operations and strategic excellence in customer service. Antique Networking was the bi-product of Kathy's penchant for lunch-time antiquing while working at a law firm. One day it hit her - shopping for specific antiques would be so much easier via a computer.

GoAntiques acquired Antique Networking Inc. in early 2001, and because both businesses were based on similar business models, the two sites made a "natural marriage". When the two sites merged, traffic zoomed to 60,000 visitors a day. Marketing savvy has played a vital role in GoAntiques' success. Aggressive deals with the internet's major portals and expanded advertising on MSN's home page have given GoAntiques the high visibility necessary to fuel success.

Top leadership is another reason. GoAntiques' Board of Directors, headed by Buhler, is composed of experienced business people from a variety of industries who offer vital input, functioning as a "think tank" and brainstorming group to provide new perspectives. And they've got a steady grasp on their business goals, which has given the company the ability to steer through the choppy waters of the Internet economy.

Baton Rouge, La. (August 28, 2001) -- The Antiques and Collectibles Dealers Association (ACDA) (www.antiqueandcollectible.com) announced its exclusive endorsement of GoAntiques, Inc. (www.goantiques.com) as the Online Solution for the antiques industry. GoAntiques is a full service provider of Internet-based sales and marketing activities for professionals in the antiques business. The company has a distribution network for dealers' inventories that includes AOL, Auction Watch, Lycos, The Antiques News, Art & Antiques Magazine, Old House Web, Old House Journal, and others. In addition, GoAntiques offers complete e-commerce enabled website development, corporate sponsorships, direct email campaigns and newsletter sponsorships all specifically geared towards building brand and selling merchandise and services for this niche market.

ACDA President Yvonne Tucker said of the endorsement, "We felt that GoAntiques shares the Association's commitment to helping members of the industry. They want to assist members in building their businesses through incremental sales on the Internet, rather than replacing existing sales." Mrs. Tucker continued, "The fact that GoAntiques' President, Ken Buhler, is an antiques dealer, paired with our long relationship with (GoAntiques' Sr. Vice Presidents) Kathy and Jim Kamnikar, were major factors in our decision to endorse GoAntiques. We believe GoAntiques is genuine and will help our members. We look forward to working with them."

Buhler is equally optimistic and appreciative of the endorsement, "We are pleased and honored with this new relationship. The ACDA is the most highly respected association of antiques and collectibles dealers in existence. It provides excellent services for its members. We appreciate the confidence they have shown in our ability to help their members and we believe we can help the association reach their goal of expanding membership and services."

About the ACDA
The ACDA was founded in 1991 by Yvonne and Jim Tucker. The primary function of the Association is to assist members through educational programs and by providing group buying power for business services. GoAntiques Launches Channel Syndication Program; OldHouseWeb and Interiorworld.com Become Affilliates

SOURCE: eNewsRelease.com

BATON ROUGE, La., April 30, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- GoAntiques (www.GoAntiques.com), the Internet's leading solution source for the antiques industry, has announced the launch of two new Channel Syndication programs, according to company CEO Ken Buhler. Separate deals with OldHouseWeb.com and InteriorWorld.com were finalized and released last week.

Both strategic partnerships involve the sharing of GoAntiques' Website content on the affiliates' sites. By clicking on the ``antique shop'' tab on the OldHouseWeb.com site, or the ``shopping tab'' on InteriorWorld.com, buyers have the ability to shop more than $83 million in art and antiques inventory. This aids the partners by supplying them with self-branded content for shoppers, and it extends GoAntiques' reach into its target demographic.

Both OldHouseWeb.com and Interiorworld.com share similar visitor demographic profiles as those visiting GoAntiques. OldHouseWeb.com, established in January 1999, is a community site that showcases information and resources for old house enthusiasts. It features articles and information on remodeling, do-it-yourself repairs, decorating tips, and more. Interiorworld.com is an online decorating magazine with articles, feature stories, resources, ideas and advice on home decorating.

The concept is not new to GoAntiques. According to Buhler, a beta test of the idea has existed with antiquesmag.com, the online version of Art & Antiques Magazine, since January.

"Our content distribution model was developed to share the inventory of our member dealers, which is unique, with sites that we have had on our radar," said Buhler. "The channel syndication adds value to the OldHouseWeb.com and InteriorWorld.com sites, along with a revenue share they earn from purchases. In addition it gives the GoAntiques Network membership greater exposure for their online inventory. It's really a win-win."

Kendall Holmes is The Old House Web's publisher and creative director: "We are excited about the idea, especially from a demographic point of view. Our site viewers are passionate about their old houses, and adding antiques and collectibles to the mix of offerings on our site will enhance their experience. After all, it's the things that go into a house that make it a home."

Lanaya Houlden, Owner/Publisher of Interiorworld.com, agrees: "We are very successful at providing feature content and advice, and resources for our site visitors, and this new channel will enhance those offerings even more. We expect the antiques and collectibles module to be a foundational part of our business plan from this point forward."

The GoAntiques Network of Websites includes GoAntiques.com, Antiqnet.com, Buycollectibles.com and AntiqnetAuctions.com. The company was established in 1999 with network sites dating as far back as 1995. Today the network hosts thousands of members and more than $83 million in antiques and collectibles inventory.

GoAntiques Acquires Antique Networking

(Baton Rouge, LA) Internet antiques sellers GoAntiques, Inc. and Antique Networking, Inc. announced that they have merged, creating what is soon to be the largest online antiques business on the web. The merger creates a single company representing over 2,000 antiques dealers with more than $80 million in inventory available for online purchase by consumers, antiques dealers, interior designers, and collectors.

The merger is a strategic move for both companies, according to Kathy Kamnikar, founder of Antique Networking, Inc. "GoAntiques has strengths in areas where we need to grow, and we have strengths in areas they need to pin down," said Kamnikar. "It's a natural. This is very positive for both companies and for the antiques industry as a whole. It helps move the combined companies forward a giant step toward reaching our goal of being the total Internet-based solution provider for the antiques industry."

Unusual for the dotcom industry, the companies were formed and managed by "antique geeks" who surrounded themselves with experienced business people and technology experts. Their approach has been different from most dotcom companies and more successful to date. Ken Buhler, founder and CEO of GoAntiques, continues as CEO of the merged companies.

Antique Networking, Inc. has been in operation since 1995 and is one of the oldest and most established names in the Internet antiques business. It also operates a website called www.buycollectibles.com and has electronic auction capabilities as well. The merger will include these features along with www.antiqnet.com, Antique Networking, Inc.'s primary website.

GoAntiques was founded in 1999 and has risen to prominence on the Internet scene with an aggressive marketing strategy and a knowledge of antiques dealers' needs. Ken Buhler, an 18-year veteran antiques dealer, says his company planned on mergers such as this from the very beginning. "We knew that if things worked out like we planned, then we would be talking to some of the other companies really soon," he admits. "Our customers need a safe place on the web to do business, and the industry needs a market leader who is able to service customers more effectively and efficiently," claims Buhler.

The GoAntiques Network of antiques-related websites (www.goantiques.com, www.antiqnet.com, and www.buycollectibles.com) will continue operating as in the past with few modifications. All changes are designed to increase the value of participation by antiques dealers and to provide a broader selection of merchandise for consumers, collectors, designers, and antiques dealers themselves.
